"High fashion, low cunning, and the boss from hell"

 

Challenged to redesign an existing book's cover, I decided The Devil Wear's Prada needed a new spin. With such a clever, simple, and iconic movie poster, there was a lot more room for that same spirit to bring the book cover to life.

I used collage elements to keep the hand-made spirit of the chick-lit genre, using improvisational textures of black and red ink and gouache to be cut out and digitally composited.

 

I used this technique for the two subjects, identifying them as the two primary characters and their conflict with one another. This cover leans into illustration, not straying from complexity in its textures and shapes, and balancing those choices with simple colors and clean use of negative space when it comes to its graphic design components,
